Roshi thanked everyone for making the effort to connect via Zoom due to the inclement weather. He next noted that we often talk about karma, our sense of identity, and what we consider real and then noting how all of this originates from our conditioning. Practice is about looking at this conditioning and realizing that what we think is real and solid is not necessarily true. If conditioning clouds reality, then we are left to wonder what is our real identity. Roshi reminded us that this process of wondering is the core of our practice. It is all about getting to what is real and true. This leads us to be wiser and present which is nothing more than living our Bodhisattva vow.
As we go into 2026 Roshi wanted us to realize that our karma is dynamic. It is not just about looking to the past and focusing on regrets. It is also about this very moment. Where we are right now is only possible because of past karma. As much as we don’t look favorably on our past, we must remember that all of our past karma brought us to the Dharma.
Roshi next reminded us that the only reason we can practice the Dharma is because we have life. Here Roshi stopped and repeated this insight for us, “Remember you are ALIVE and nothing can beat that.” We have no idea what happens to us after we die, however, right now we have the ability to live, love, and most importantly, practice. Do not take this for granted – it truly is the greatest gift! Our practice teaches us to always be present in this moment and not to “dream walk” through life. Yes, there is pain and suffering (first noble truth), but while we have life, we have the ability to resolve our issues and improve as a person. After our life ends, we lose those options.
Roshi wrapped up by expressing his deep gratitude to the sangha for their diligent practice. The collective effort and merit of the sangha continually support and strengthens his own practice, and for this, he said, he remains profoundly grateful.
